If you're one of those hipsters who likes jazzy beats mixed with live instrumentation and retro stylings, there's no doubt that you'll love "Bossa Per Due". Italy's smooth-as-gelato musical export, Nicola Conte drums up the best of these elements for an album full of sounds that would make his ancestors Lalo Schiffrin and Nino Rota proud. Just sample snippets of the ethno-jazzical

If you think Nicola Conte gained overnight success because of that silly Acura commercial, guess again. Just like every independent, this man has been on the scene for years. Based in Italy, Conte has been part of the country's new jazz wave that includes labels like Right Tempo and Schema. Hailing from Bari, classically-trained DJ/producer Conte was the mastermind behind mid-90s bands such as the Paola Achenza Trio, Quintetto X, and Fez Combo, names which helped to bring jazz-influenced music back into the international scene. With infamous Italian soundtracks from the 60s and 70s as the reference point, these bands and labels restyled retro sounds for the present. They continue to do so, always bringing into the mix new musical elements. "Bossa Per Due" features 18 live vocalists and musicians to create luscious modern soundscapes that allude to everything from Miles Davis to Lalo Schiffrin while still breaking new musical ground. |
